Roles nowadays are getting scanty. But infrequently, it only becomes “scarce” due to the way we outline it. There are some folks that aren’t sufficiently educated but train themselves, even on their own, to obtain talents in some artisanal craft, offer their products to a selected market, successfully build a career on it and work to get themselves rich. They get knowledge and talents along the way in aid of mastery of their craft and in the management of the business that’s developed out of the craft. That’s work creation for the self and others the self-made businessman made feasible.
It is unlucky that the normal mindset is that of an “employee culture”. People think about roles as something that is already there to take. There’s nothing bad with that except that because too many folk are of that mind-set, the job marketplace has become so saturated that we view jobs as scarce. This mind-set puts us in a limiting trap. Most folks believe that they “lost everything” when they lose their jobs in the same way that many Chinese businessmen commit suicide when bad luck takes over their businesses causing them to be broke. As they say, “business is my life.”
Exactly as in any other side of life, folk should not consider roles to be the be-all and end-all of existence. There are Other facets of our lives. We should “look beyond the wall”. Limiting one’s self is a sure killer. The self-image suffers or vanishes altogether causing a person to become more unattractive to roles. It is usually at these crossroads that people have significant realisations and see things that did not appear to be there before. It is the point where he seriously assesses himself, his self-worth and the things that actually count to him. It is at about that point that he sees things obviously. It is at this point, knowing he has touched “rock bottom”, that he realizes there’s no other way but up.
It is very unlucky that it is also at that point that some individuals only see the gloom, failing to objectively assess themselves and think that there is “no more hope left” and unhappily end their lives. ( What a dumb thing to do, if you ask me. ) These varieties of folk need others true “friends” to reassure them and rouse them from their stupidity. But if not skilfully brought back to “reality” or the “soft spot” isn’t pinpointed, nothing can be done any more.
Whatever it is, a positive perspective must be developed and maintained toward roles and everything else in life. Our outlook is the defining factor that shapes our destiny. As Doctor. Stephen Richards Covey puts it in his top selling book, The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Folk :
“Sow a thought, harvest an action.
Sow an action, reap a habit.
Sow a habit, harvest a character.
Sow a character, reap destiny.”
